A successful premiere of the STABAT MATER ballet took place in Ukraine due to the Denis Matvienko Fund in June, 2015. Ukraine became the third country after Germany and Slovenia, where one act ballet the Stabat Mater was shown. Edward Clug created this ballet on the Munich theater request, where he was suggested to take the Stabat Mater work (“The sorrowful mother stood”) as a base. The Stabat Mater is based on the famous Catholic hymn with the same name, created by Giovanni Pergolesi on Jacopone da Todi’s poems in the XVIII century. “Catholic music is fascinating, it is optimistic and light, even when it comes to death, torture and mother’s pain. Pain for the son because of the mother Mary’s pain sounds in the Catholic hymn Stabat Mater. First of all, subtle reproduction, imitation and modernization of Italian painting traces in the Stabat Mater. I saw the influence of El Greco. The dancers’ costumes reminded me about Stefano Maderno’s Saint Cecilia. And coloristics, movements, nymphinity – like from the pictures of Angelica Kauffman…” Larisa Denisenko, writer
