First prize winner of the world-renowned George Enescu International Piano Competition and laureate of numerous international competitions, Israeli-Ukrainian pianist Alexandra Segal enjoys an active career, giving concerts in the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Israel, Romania, Austria, Poland, Croatia, Ukraine and more. She appeared at several notable venues such as the Romanian Athenaeum, Kyiv Philharmonic, Tel Aviv Museum of Arts, and was broadcasted live in the national television and radio channels of Romania (TVR), Israel (Kan Kol HaMusica) and Ukraine (NSTU).

Alexandra has performed with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Haifa Symphony Orchestra, Kiev Chamber Orchestra, Donetsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Pitesti Philharmonic Orchestra, Raanana Symphonette Orchestra and the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Avi Ostrowsky, Yoav Talmi, Kensho Watanabe and Vag Papian.

Born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1995, she started her piano studies with prof. Natalie Tolpygo. She obtained her Bachelor degree at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music with prof. Tomer Lev and her Master degree at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany with prof. Balazs Szokolay.

She is currently finishing her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with prof. Milana Chernyavska.

… It was the apotheosis of the evening at the Athenaeum. Alexandra Segal performed an extremely demanding concert, with the vision of a great soloist. Her spontaneity is captivating. From delicate sonorities in pianissimo to accumulations of volcanic magma, she knows how to clarify or cloud the musical narrative, moving from one state of mind to another like a flake instantly melts on human skin. She knows how to create a steely, then smooth, aquatic, or bubbling sound; she wields the playful with kaleidoscopic images, moving swiftly to the grotesque, through figurations reminiscent of baubles, to catapult you into a zone of ascetic depth. Listening to her pianistic peroration, you try to run your mind after the musical ideas she whispers. But you find that the quickness of her thought is one that belongs only to the spirit, and you cannot reach her otherwise, with anything physically similar. It is fascinating how she speaks with dozens of vocal cords, transformed into the totality of the piano’s strings. The variations in the second part sounded splendid, dominated by the sarcasm typical of Prokofiev’s music. I perceived galloping rhythms, syncopated formulas, rapid sweeps of the entire piano keyboard, hints of jazz, alternating with haunting meditations on the main theme. The Finale sung with dizzying virtuosity. And the Coda exploded into a musical battle between soloist and orchestra, with prominent piano flourishes flying over the orchestra. That famous and difficult double-note arpeggio was simply pulverized.

The vulnerability of being centre stage

It’s always comforting, as a mere arm-chair viewer with no axe to grind, to find oneself in full accord with the jury. Alexandra Segal’s dazzling performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No 3 in C major, Op.26 at the Grand Final of the Enescu International Competition for the Piano Section, left us in little doubt as to the eventual winner. Hers was an extraordinarily virtuosic, buoyant rendition, impressing with both its intelligence and power, showing her to be flawlessly in command not only of her instrument but of her relationship with the orchestra.
