TRIO WANDERER

BIOGRAPHY

Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian, violin
Raphaël Pidoux, cello
Vincent Coq, piano

Three-time recipients of the Victoires de la Musique award for Best Instrumental Ensemble of the Year, the Trio Wanderer has, over the years, become one of the leading chamber ensembles on the international music scene. The ensemble chose travel as its emblem: the inward journey that closely connects them to Schubert and German Romanticism, and the outward, inquisitive journey that explores a repertoire ranging from Haydn to contemporary music.

Described by The Strad Magazine as “Wandering Stars,” Trio Wanderer is regularly invited to perform at the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Wigmore Hall, Suntory Hall, Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, Palau de la Música in Barcelona, La Scala in Milan, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Great Hall, the Library of Congress in Washington, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and Zurich’s Tonhalle. The Trio also appears at major international festivals such as Edinburgh, Montreux, Gstaad, the Schubertiades, Schleswig-Holstein, Stresa, La Roque d’Anthéron, Osaka, La Folle Journée de Nantes, and Salzburg.

In the repertoire for triple concerto, Trio Wanderer has performed more than one hundred times with leading orchestras around the world under the baton of conductors including Yehudi Menuhin, Christopher Hogwood, James Loughran, François-Xavier Roth, Marco Guidarini, Ken-David Masur, Louis Langrée, José Areán, Arie van Beek, Charles Dutoit, and James Conlon.

In addition to recordings for Sony Classical, Universal, Cyprès, Mirare, and Capriccio, Trio Wanderer began its collaboration with Harmonia Mundi in 1999. Since then, more than twenty recordings have been released, including complete editions of the piano trios of Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms, as well as Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne.

These recordings have received numerous critical distinctions, including Choc de l’Année from Le Monde de la Musique, Editor’s Choice from Gramophone, CD des Monats from Fono Forum, CD of the Month from BBC Music Magazine, the Diapason d’Or de l’Année, and the Midem Classical Award. Their most recent recording, released in 2023 and devoted to the works of César Franck, was awarded a Diapason d’Or.

Deeply committed to contemporary music, Trio Wanderer has premiered works by Thierry Escaich, Bruno Mantovani, Frank Michael Beyer, Christian Rivet, Matteo Franceschini, Philippe Hersant, and many others.

In 2015, the members of Trio Wanderer were appointed Chevaliers of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.
